Once you have the basics of a given technological leap in place, it’s always important to step back and focus on the people for a while.
Jaron Lanier, You Are Not a Gadget

Let some idle moments be.

The next time you’re standing in line, or riding the bus, or waiting for your cappuccino, spend your idle moment in idleness. Resist the urge to fill the ‘empty’ time with email, games or apps, and experience emptiness itself. What do you hear? What do you smell? How does your body feel? What are people around you doing? Are you daydreaming? Are you worried about something?

What do you notice about the world and your self that you otherwise wouldn’t have?

people have committed to this Gadget Rule

I will allow some idle moments to pass idly, experiencing empty time instead of reaching for a gadget for the next seven days.

Let me know when new Gadget Rules are published.
